Advice from Joey Flynn

Some of the most memorable moments in design school were going to talks.

Alums would come back, talk about how life has been, and they would be very honest and earnest about it. Some of these talks would be sponsored by their companies of course, but they were never ads. They were frank stories with a free sandwich and maybe some swag.

One particular memorable talk was by Joey Flynn and was part of a whole event. Joey, Drew Hamlin, Francis Luu, and others were from the 2009 cohort. A cohort, which incredibly, accomplished so much, notably, having most of the earlier Facebook designers.

Now, 10 years later, they were reuniting in Seattle to give short pecha-kuchas (20 slides, 20 seconds each).

Joey’s talk was about 10 things he learned. It was funny, poignant, and useful for any designer. I loved the talk so much and wanted to re-watch it, but for some reason, the recording wasn’t released until much later.

Even today, I still love it so much. And still trying to learn every language, and still trying to remember that perfect is better than done 🙂
